Ulibischeff, Alexander von

1795-1858

Russian diplomat and amateur of music. He was born in Dresden while his father was ambassador there. He also held various diplomatic positions at European Courts, and, after the accession of the Czar Nicholas, he retired to his estate at Nishnij Novgorod, where he died. He wrote a biography of Mozart, which was followed by a sketch on the general history of music. This work contains an adverse criticism of the last works of Beethoven, to which von Lenz took exception in his Beethoven et Ses Trois Styles. Ulibischeff replied with Beethoven, Ses Critiques et Ses Glossateurs, which showed his inability to appreciate Beethoven, and at the time aroused much disapprobation.
